Conn Iggulden’s Top 6 Writing Tips

  1. Plan. If you don’t have the skeleton from historical events, make sure you know where you are going. It will not ruin creativity, any more than having rules ruins sport. They create sport.
  2. Polish. There are some people who don’t care about spelling, punctuation, or grammar. Very few are in publishing. Learn that ‘all right’ is two words, not one. Get a copy of Fowler’s Modern English and read it. Also, get a good dictionary and Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable just because it’s brilliant and endlessly interesting.
  3. Stay off Twitter and social media. It is a thief of time.
  4. Try to write clean prose, without unnecessary verbiage. It’s difficult. Orwell was a master of clear language, as was Gemmell. Lee Child knew his onions as did Dick Francis. Every scene – every line – should either move the plot on or deepen understanding of character. If it doesn’t, cut it.
  5. Understand that all rules can be broken.
  6. Even when you are writing a top five.
