What To Do When Motivation Fades

The seasons are changing, writers. How are you doing with your writing goals?

We know that motivation can be a fickle thing. It comes and goes just like the seasons. Sometimes, you’ll be bursting with inspiration and ideas, and other times, you are frozen and can barely string two words together.

How can we improve our consistency when it comes to our motivation and writing habits? In Atomic Habits, James Clear mentions habit stacking. What does this mean? It means that you need to take a habit that you are already doing, consistently and with little thought, and then add the new habit in between that routine.

Let’s say you want to write more. A common goal for us, right? What are you already doing?

My day starts with updating my task list for the day and then sending and replying to email. I stuck my writing time in between the task list and the email. My writing become the first item on my task list. I got to spend 30 minutes on my creative work before I did my day job stuff.

Mindset shift:

I have always put my creative work last. I considered it my reward. I only got to do it after my work was done. That meant I was tired and that my most important work got “what was left”. By doing my creative work first thing I was giving it my best and it invigorated me for the rest of the day.

By stacking my new habit between existing habits, I was able to make it sustainable and start my day in a much nicer way. Coffee was also involved, of course.
