30 Writing Prompts For September 2024

As I mentioned, we are going to use our prompts to practice our craft.

(NOTE: You will receive your monthly prompts as always, but this year I would like you to focus on specific aspects of your novel. This is, of course, entirely optional. You can also use the prompts to free-write.)

*** I did say we were going to talk about symbolism and foreshadowing, but I want to talk about dialogue instead. We’ll do symbolism and foreshadowing in another post.***

Dialogue

This month, I want you to focus on dialogue. It is an amazing tool that brings your character to life.

Keep in mind that dialogue includes:

1. The words spoken aloud by the characters
2. The dialogue tags
3. The body language
4. The thoughts of the viewpoint character

It is a very powerful tool. Why do we use dialogue:

1. It reveals character
2. It moves the story forward
3. It adds conflict and tension
4. It gives information
5. It creates white space

Use the prompts to play with dialogue. These are not necessarily scenes that will be used in your book, but rather scenes that will help you explore character and conflict. Make your characters talk. It solves so many writing problems.

Some writers feel a little overwhelmed to write dialogue and I know that the formatting can be tricky in the beginning. This video is great for formatting tips
