The Two-Minute Rule That Leads To Mastery

It is November and the end of the year is looming close. I want to take a moment to talk about one more concept that James Clear recommends.

He calls it the 2-Minute Rule. It is a simple yet powerful principle that can help you achieve your goals and master any skill. When we have a new habit, we want to form it can be intimidating. We may feel overwhelmed or discouraged, and we may procrastinate.

The 2-Minute Rule makes it easy to get started. By breaking down your goal of writing a book into small, two-minute tasks you make it more likely that you will actually start writing and we all know that is the hardest part.

Once you start writing, it’s much easier to keep going. When you’re already in motion, it takes less energy to keep moving forward.

Yes, writing for two minutes seems a little silly, but that is how you build a habit. You break it down into the smallest manageable part. Don’t focus on writing a whole book. Just focus on writing for two minutes.

I haven’t convinced you yet, have I? You see, you have to master a habit before you can improve it. Start with only two minutes and those two minutes will become three, then four and eventually your paragraphs will grow into pages and pages will become books, but you have to get started. Once you start you can improve and that leads to mastery of your craft.
