Writers Write shares writing prompts and writing resources. Use these writing prompts for May 2025 to get you writing.
Hello Writer
This month, we are talking about verbs. In 2023, we focused on building habits, beating procrastination and improving discipline. In 2024, we worked on our novels and improved our craft. This year, we are taking a closer look at editing, specifically self-editing. It is an essential skill every writer needs to master, but man, being objective and cutting down your own work is hard.
Along with a short editing lesson, you will also receive your monthly prompts as usual. Editing is definitely second-draft stuff. Use the prompts to freewrite, THEN try to apply the editing suggestions. This is optional.
If this is your first time using prompts, you can learn more about freewriting here.
Verbs
Okay, let’s dive into the parts of speech. I want to start talking about the different words we use. So we’ve looked at adverbs, and we can agree that we can make our writing stronger without them. How do we do that?
Not all verbs are created equal
Use strong verbs comes up again and again when it comes to writing advice, but we still ignore it. Strong verbs invigorate your prose. They do the heavy lifting. Weak verbs rely on adverbs to convey meaning. Strong verbs paint a clearer picture in the reader’s mind. They don’t have to try as hard.
Weak verbs are words like sit, talk, walk, and run. They need adverbs to tell us how they are being done. Consider words like slouch, jabber, shuffle and bolt. They create clearer images of the action. Think about a woman who walks, vs a woman who strides, vs a woman who tiptoes, vs a woman who shuffles. Each verb created a different character.
Homework
Use the prompt to freewrite. Once you are done with the first draft, find your verbs and evaluate them.
Next month we’ll start looking at the adjectives.
