Hello Writer
This month we are talking about sentence length. In 2023, we focussed on building habits, beating procrastination and improving discipline. In 2024, we worked on our novels and improved our craft. This year, we are taking a closer look at editing, specifically self-editing. It is an essential skill every writer needs to master, but man, being objective and cutting down your own work is hard.
Along with a short editing lesson, you will also receive your monthly prompts as usual. Editing is definitely second-draft stuff. Use the prompts to free write, THEN try to apply the editing suggestions. This is optional.

Sentence Length
Okay, let’s say you have evaluated your sentences and you have decided that they are integral to the story. Now you can improve those sentences. Play with the length of the sentences. We need to vary the length of our sentences. We need to make them sing.
Sentence Length Influences Pacing
When you decide to shorten or lengthen a sentence you will influence the pacing of your story. Short sentences will speed it up. Long sentences will slow it down.
Short Sentences
Use fragments and phrases to increase the pace. Try using three- or five-word sentences.
Long Sentences
Use commas and conjunctions to slow down. Can you write a three-line sentence that takes your reader’s breath away?
Homework
Use the prompt to free write. Once you are done with the first draft, evaluate the sentences and decide if you need to slow down or speed up the story. You can start fast, slow down and speed up again or start slow and speed up towards the end. Changing pace is vital in your stories.
