31 Writing Prompts For August 2025

Writers Write shares writing prompts and writing resources. Use these writing prompts for August 2025 to get you writing.

Hello Writer

This month we are talking about modifiers, qualifiers and intensifiers. In 2023, we focused on building habits, beating procrastination and improving discipline. In 2024, we worked on our novels and improved our craft. This year, we are taking a closer look at editing, specifically self-editing. It is an essential skill every writer needs to master, but man, being objective and cutting down your own work is hard.

Along with a short editing lesson, you will also receive your monthly prompts as usual. Editing is definitely second-draft stuff. Use the prompts to free write, THEN try to apply the editing suggestions. This is optional.

If this is your first time using prompts, you can learn more about free writing here.

Modifiers, qualifiers and intensifiers

We like turkey stuffing, ravioli and full Christmas stockings. Those are the only things we should be stuffing. Not our sentences. That is what modifiers, qualifiers, and intensifiers do to our sentences. They fill them up and, unlike turkeys, ravioli and Christmas stockings, it isn’t always necessary.

At their best, these words add additional information, important details or clarity to your sentences. At their worst, they bog down your sentences and slow down your story.

Modifiers are adverbs and adjectives. We’ve discussed those, so I’m not going to talk about them too much.

Intensifiers, as their name suggests, add intensity to, wait for it: adverbs and adjectives. Sometimes we need to add intensity, but can you see what a slippery slope we are on? We’re already adding adjectives and adverbs we don’t necessarily need, and now we’re adding intensifiers on top of that.

Qualifiers also add to our sentences, but when intensifiers can strengthen a description, qualifiers mostly lead to ambiguity and weak sentences.

What to look out for?

Very is a common culprit. More examples are: quite, remarkably, totally, extremely, terribly and awfully.

Also, look out for: usually, generally, somewhat, more, less, least, so, just, enough, indeed, still, almost, most, fairly, really, pretty much, even, a bit, a little, a good deal, a great deal, kind of, sort of

But…

The exception to this in fiction will always come in dialogue. When we speak, we use modifiers, qualifiers and intensifiers. Your characters will too. Less is more, though, and make sure it is deliberate.

Homework

Use the prompts to free write. Once you are done with the first draft, find your modifiers, qualifiers and intensifiers and evaluate them.

Next month we’ll start looking at punctuation.
