Hello Writer
This month, we are talking about nouns. In 2023, we focused on building habits, beating procrastination and improving discipline. In 2024, we worked on our novels and improved our craft. This year, we are taking a closer look at editing, specifically self-editing. It is an essential skill every writer needs to master, but man, being objective and cutting down your own work is hard.
Along with a short editing lesson, you will also receive your monthly prompts as usual. Editing is definitely second-draft stuff. Use the prompts to free write, THEN try to apply the editing suggestions. This is optional.

Nouns
So, we’ve looked at adjectives and we want to use them in a way that adds to our work and does not bog down our stories. How can we make sure our adjectives are truly necessary? We do this by evaluating our nouns.
Specificity
We’ve often been told to be specific, but what does that look like in our writing? Surely saying red car is being specific? It is, but it can be better. A red convertible and a red station wagon both belong to two very different people. Blue shoes sound great, but are the sneakers or stilettos? Think about your nouns. They can convey so much. Just like we want to use strong verbs, we need strong nouns.
Is your character sitting on a chair, a stool or a chaise lounge? Are they perched, draped or slouched? Strong nouns and verbs will change the way you tell stories.
Homework
Use the prompt to free write. Once you are done with the first draft, find your nouns and evaluate them.
