Last month, we spoke about how to use the writing prompts to improve productivity and to increase your word count. In the upcoming months, I want to talk about using prompts to ‘change’ your writing.
I want to encourage you to use the prompts to experiment and develop your skills. This is optional, of course. You can use the prompts simply to write every day, but if you would like I will set an additional challenge for each month to focus on a certain aspect of the craft.
It is important to remember that changing your writing takes time. Now, you may be wondering: why would you want to change your writing and how would you go about it?
Well, is there something that you have identified in your work? Do you rarely use dialogue? Do you struggle with showing? Do your descriptions grind your stories to a halt? In the upcoming months, we will use these daily prompts to practice and improve our writing.
To practise this, set your intention before you begin to write, just like you set your timer. I write my intention in the corner of the page. If I want to focus on setting, I write the word ‘setting’. This helps to remind me what I want to work on, on that specific day.
As I said, this is entirely optional. You are welcome to simply use the prompts and get words on the page.
Craft book: On Writing by Stephen King
An oldie, but still a goodie. I reread this book every few years. It serves as a reminder that writing is a job, a wonderful one, but it removes the romance from the task and reminds me that I need to show up and do the work.
Homework: as you do the daily prompt identify your strengths and weaknesses in your writing. Write a list of specific things you would like to work on in the upcoming months.
I hope you will join me from next month for our ‘intentional practice’.
