Heroes Vs Anti-Heroes: What’s The Difference?

The Hero

According to the Oxford University Press dictionary, a hero is ‘a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities’.

In fiction, a hero is a character who is usually associated with positive qualities. The reader admires or sympathises with them. Heroes often act according to a moral code, face challenges with courage, and try to achieve something greater than themselves.

The Anti-Hero

An anti-hero is ‘a central character in a story, film, or drama who lacks conventional heroic attributes’.

These missing qualities may include idealism, courage, or morality. Anti-heroes may still do the right thing, but their reasons are complicated. They usually act out of self-interest, personal pain, revenge, survival, or a desire to achieve their own goals.

Anti-heroes are not necessarily bad people. Their flaws, contradictions, and weaknesses often make them more realistic and interesting to readers.
