The Next Year

‘It is only by writing, not dreaming about it, that we develop our own style.’ P.D. James

What are your writing plans for next year? You have worked hard to write every day and now the next year looms large. I hope that you will continue with your daily writing practice and that you have learnt more about yourself, your own writing process, and your stories.

You may have skimmed through these pieces in the beginning of the year or read them at the beginning of each month, but please take a moment to read through these suggestions again, and decide how you will use your daily writing practise next year. If you skipped days, will you try to write every day? Will you try experimentation, or have you identified something in your writing that you would like to change or strengthen?

Build on the work you have created throughout the year, but most importantly, please take a moment to pat yourself on the back. You have written every day for 365 days – a whole year! You can truly call yourself a writer, because it is only the writing that makes you a writer.

Page through your notebooks, scroll through your monster document, and take a moment to appreciate what you have achieved. I hope the next will be even better, so, to quote Natalie Goldberg, ‘buy a cheap notebook and fast pen’.

We’ll see you again on 1 January 2022 to crack the spine on your brand new notebook.
