2 Perfect Scene Templates To Help You Plot Your Book

In this post, we give you two perfect scene templates to help you plot your book.

I have been writing about mastering scenes and sequels in your books.

These posts included:

  1. the basics of scenes and sequels,
  2. the anatomy of a scene, and
  3. the anatomy of a sequel.

Please read them.

In today’s post, I have included scene templates to help you plot these storytelling units.

2 Perfect Scene Templates To Help You Plot Your Book

How to use the scene templates

  1. Keep the scenes in numbered sequence.
  2. Print 60 copies of the scene template. (This is a guideline.)
  3. Print 30 copies of the sequel template. (This is a guideline.)
  4. Fill them in.
  5. Stick them up on a wall, and move them around as necessary.

These are the five most important questions to answer in each scene:

  1. Is it a scene or sequel?
  2. Who is the character with a scene goal?
  3. What is that goal?
  4. Who stops them from achieving it?
  5. How do they fail? What is the ‘failure’ at the end of the scene?

You need the following information for your scene templates:

  1. Scene number (where does it fit into the sequence of the book?)
  2. Scene type: Is it a scene or a sequel?
  3. Setting
  4. Who is the viewpoint character (VPC)?
  5. Who tries to stop the VPC from achieving the scene goal? This is the opposition character (OC) for the scene. They are not necessarily the main opposition character in the novel.
  6. Who supports the character in a sequel? This is usually the confidant or friend.
  7. Other characters: If there are any in the scene.
  8. How will you create conflict?
  9. Do you have enough dialogue in your scene?
  10. Will you have a ‘disaster’ at the end of the scene?

Top Tip: Remember that you can create your own scene templates to plot your book.
