5 Reasons To Say Yes To Your Book

Struggling to write? In this post, we give you five reasons to say yes to your book.

5 Reasons To Say Yes To Your Book

Apart from the possibility of potential fame and fortune, there are a number of healthy psychological reasons why you should write a book which include:

  1. Research – A life filled with discovery and learning
  2. Beating Procrastination – Developing discipline
  3. Upskilling – Mastering a variety of new skills
  4. Personal Development – Developing a deeper empathy for others
    1. Deepening a greater self-awareness
    2. Developing a stronger ability to process difficult experiences and feelings
    3. Gaining a deep sense of purpose, completion, and enjoyment
  5. Becoming part of a great community of like-minded people

Why is research so important for writers?

Research is obviously important for the veracity of your novel, but it is excellent for your mental health. Continual learning throughout your life is vital when it comes to keeping your brain active, improving your learning and thinking skills, your memory, your use of language and your attention and perception abilities. Not to mention that going on research rabbit trails is a whole lot of fun. They can give you ideas for new plots as well.

Is procrastination good for you?

Creative people find what others see as procrastination useful. It can provide creative thinking time. Take walking for example. It’s a favourite activity for writers because it provides time for creative problem solving, and you get physically fit at the same time! Housework will always be there so try not to use that as a reason for procrastination!

Why is it important to upskill?

“My daddy, my granddaddy, and my great granddaddy all worked in the mine. I work in the mine and my son works in the mine. They can’t close the mines!”
Well, they can actually. If there’s nothing let to mine, they will close them. That’s why having only one skill is dangerous.

Here are ways writers can both add to their skill set and potentially make more money as a writer.

  • Better Storytelling: Learn what makes a good story and put that into action.
  • Research: Learn how to do better research. The internet is not the only place to do research. Libraries, museums, interviewing people, visiting locations are just some of the other ways research can be conducted. Effective research will also include researching your target audience and how to best to attract them.
  • Editing and proofreading: Not only will this help you edit and proofread your own work, but it will also allow you to offer those services to other writers.
  • SEO: Learn SEO – better SEO in your book marketing will help you sell more books.
  • Social Media Marketing: Learn how to wrangle social media to better advantage for your books.
  • Project Management: Learning how to manage projects will help you beat procrastination, and expand your team when you need illustrations, printing, delivery, etc.
  • Mastering different tools and software: There are so many different writing and design tools available, many for free, that will help you create your books and all your social media content that it would be criminal not to learn how to use them.

There are courses you can do to learn all these skills. If you take legitimate courses that provide you with a recognised degree, diploma, or certificate, you can add those to your CV and offer those skills to other writers, or, in some cases institutions. A young man I know is a doctor. He began writing short-stories, and did an editing course. He now is part of the curriculum creation team at the teaching hospital as a result. Courses are doors. All you have to do is go through them. Who knows what you may find on the other side.

How does being an author contribute to your personal development?

The research involved in writing a novel reveals a myriad of different eras, laws, lifestyles, opinions, and history etc. It’s inevitable that this will affect and inform your plot and characters. It will, more than likely, cause you to rethink some of your own opinions and beliefs.

The best way to write a believable character is to put yourself in their shoes. Let’s say your character loses her job on the same day her husband asks for a divorce. That’s a lot to deal with. Writing through this will give you a lot of experience in thinking sympathetically through difficult experiences and emotions, giving you greater empathy for other people outside of the confines of your book. It will also deepen your own self-awareness.

The very act of plotting, writing and editing a book will give you a deep sense of purpose, completion, and enjoyment. It’s one of the main reasons writers write.

Why is it important for writers to join writers’ groups?

For many people, writer’s block is a very real thing. There’s also the long, lonely hours involved in writing a book, the self-doubt, etc. A writer’s group provides help with plot or character development ideas. It also provides companionship with people who are on the same path as you, who will also hold you accountable and encourage you.
