Month 8: Writer’s block

Hello Writer

This year, I want to focus on the most common challenges we face as writers.

Every month, along with these daily prompts, I’d like to share an exercise to help us deal with challenges like writer’s block, perfectionism, procrastination, and imposter syndrome.

Getting started

Your inner critic is loud, but it isn’t the boss of you. This month, we’re practising a little kindness for your past self and your present self. Memory is fickle, but looking back at work you have done in the past can be pleasantly surprising.

Now, the critic is cruel, but it can be taught to be kind. Looking back at work your work should be done with an open heart and an open mind. Be gentle when you read through those pieces. Commend your earlier past self for doing the work. Praise your past self for showing up to the page. This isn’t as bad as I thought, is a perfectly acceptable thought and good place to start. Creativity flourishes when it feels safe and can take risks. The exercise below will guide you.

Exercise:

Go back to an old piece of writing. Highlight only what you like about it, the sentence that made you smile, the phrase that still works.

You retrain your inner critic to become a supportive ally, celebrating growth instead of punishing mistakes.
