May – Getting Unstuck
Month 5: Baby steps
Hello Writer
This year, I want to focus on the most common challenges we face as writers.
Every month, along with a daily prompt, I’d like to share an exercise that helps us deal with challenges like writer’s block, perfectionism, procrastination, and imposter syndrome.
Getting started
Big goals can be scary. Tiny goals? Much less so. This month, we’re breaking the big goals down and focusing on consistency over intensity. A little bit each day goes further than waiting for the ‘perfect moment’.
Exercise:
Step 1: Pick one tiny daily writing goal: 100 words, 10 minutes, or even a single paragraph. Show up to the page and do this daily.
Step 2: Track it for the month.
Step 3: Calculate your totals. How many words and/or hours did you write?
Step 4: Celebrate and try to do the same the next month.
Why does this work?
Small goals are easier to achieve and build trust with your creative self. Momentum and growth comes from showing up consistently, not sporadic sprinting.
Next month we will talk about perfectionism.
Good luck, writer.
