November
Month 11: Finding Your Flow
Hello Writer
This year, I want to focus on the most common challenges we face as writers.
Every month, along with a prompt for every day, I’d like to share an exercise that helps us deal with challenges like writer’s block, perfectionism, procrastination, and imposter syndrome.
Getting started
Overthinking can strangle your words before they leave your brain. This month, we’re letting go and trusting the flow. We tend to overthink because we want to know all the answers before we start. We want all answers because we don’t want to get it wrong, but that is the thing with creative writing. It is impossible to predict everything. We need to take risks. We need to get it wrong to know how to get it right, and you only figure that out during the writing.
Exercise:
Set a timer for 12 minutes. Write continuously and without expectation. No stopping. No editing. No judging. Once you are done, you can reevaluate that piece and start fixing it.
Why does this work?
Flow comes when you stop controlling the words and start letting them move.
Next month, we will take stock.
Good luck, writer.
