Month 9: Resistance – Writer’s Block

This year, I want to focus on the most common challenges we face as writers.

Every month, along with a prompt for every day, I’d like to share an exercise that helps us deal with challenges like writer’s block, perfectionism, procrastination, and imposter syndrome.

Getting started

In his book, The War of Art, Steven Pressfield talks about resistance. Some people call it writer’s block, but I prefer his terminology. He says resistance is neither good nor bad, it merely is, and the job of resistance is to maintain the status quo. It keeps us safe. If nothing changes, we don’t risks and let’s be honest writing a book, putting ourselves on the page, baring our souls to public is a huge risk. After all, the writing doesn’t lie. That is why resistance can feel like a fog: invisible, frustrating, and persistent. This month, we’re putting it on the page. Where it belongs.

Exercise:

Write about why you don’t want to write today. List every excuse, fear, and frustration. Don’t hold back. Once you have listed everything look at this and decide if these worries and fears are enough to make you stop. Do you dare to write?

Why does this work?

Once resistance is named, it loses some of its power. You can move past it instead of fighting it blindly.
