What You Could Be Reading Right Now

Discover what you could be reading right now with inspiring book recommendations, literary trends, and ideas to spark your own writing.

You should be writing right now, but if you need a break…

Sometimes there are too many new things to choose from, so let me do it for you! Here are three books I think you’ll like. Why not give them a go?

Three Books You Could Be Reading Right Now

1. Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke, published 7 April 2026

What if you were the worst kind of famous? You know, famous for being famous. Instagram famous.

You make videos of recipes that are actually produced by professional chefs in the background. Your husband is the heir to a family fortune while he pretends to be a gentleman farmer. He wants to keep his family name clean in case he runs for office one day. Your children look darling. But you often forget they exist because you so seldom see them. That’s the nanny’s job anyway.

Suddenly, you wake up and your worst dream has come true.

The world has changed magically into a pre-industrial state. There is no internet, no AI, and no PAs to help you. If you want water for a bath, you’re going to have to carry it yourself. And, you will also have to talk to your family.

2. Project Hail Mary: A Novel by Andy Weir, published 4 May 2021 (Back on the bestseller charts thanks to the film adaptation)

The author of The Martian brings us another space adventure.

An astronaut awakens alone on a spacecraft with the two corpses of his former crew. His memory is spotty, and he can’t shake the thought that he has something important to do.

Not just for himself; but for all of humanity.

This is more ‘Science Forward’ SF in the style of The Martian but with greater stakes than ever before. Can science save the day?

3. Starside: A Novel by Alex Aster, published 31 March 2026

I think this is trying to be a fantasy Hunger Games. But, it reads like a battle anime.

Starside and Darkside have been at war forever. The conflict was so great, it split the land in two. On one side live the immortals. Every 50 years they have a contest where 50 people can challenge for the right to cross over from Darkside into Starside.

Our protagonist, Aris enters the contest not to seek magic, wealth, or immortality. She wants revenge.

If this book is well received, we could see it on the silver screen shortly.

The Last Word

Whether you choose satire, science fiction, or fantasy, the right book can entertain and teach you about storytelling. Reading helps when you’re looking for ideas. So, take a break, pick up one of these books, and then get back to your writing with renewed inspiration.
