International Children’s Book Day (ICBD) is celebrated to inspire a love of reading and to call attention to children’s books. It has been held on or around the anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday, 2 April, since 1967.
The theme for 2015 is Many Cultures One Story
I wanted to put together a list of the best-selling children’s authors of all time, but it was almost impossible to find accurate statistics. I looked at various sources and decided to settle for a list of probabilities in the end.
Although none of these authors came close to the best-selling author of all time, Agatha Christie, they have sold an impressive number of books. Christie wrote 85 books that sold between two and four billion copies. Four of the children’s authors are featured in the Top 10 Authors in any genre.

What about Robert Munsch? Barbara Reid? Munsch has surely sold in those figures or close to it. I also love Tedd Arnold (Parts, More Parts, Even More Parts, Fly Guy series). Mem Fox, Kathy Stinson, Kenneth Oppel to name a few more.
Well that;s interesting, but I wonder which are the best-selling southern African authors of children’s books, and which are the best children’s books set in southern Africa — can you (or anyone else) add to this list on Good Reads?
We don’t know, Steve. We can’t find any data on this.
