Many people say they don’t have time or money, but it’s good to remember what Mark Twain said, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.”
Spending time alone
Many people are afraid of travelling alone. While it’s nearly impossible to know when you will feel lonely, it’s important to know the benefits of being on your own. The fewer distractions you have, the more productive you are.
Communication gap
If you are not a polyglot, it might be hard for you to communicate abroad. Of course, knowing English is great, but there are not many foreign people who speak it well. However, you have a card up your sleeve: gestures and mimics. Trying to communicate with people without words helps you develop critical thinking and you start being more creative. This is a good thing for writers!
Learn from people you meet and your heroes
Who is your favourite writer? Twain, Kafka, or Doyle? If you want to get inspiration from these writing gurus, visit their museums while travelling. When walking around cities, you will come across street musicians, dancers, and artists. While you watch them, try to learn something from them: techniques, insights, or mannerisms. The world is full of creative people, and you never know when you will find inspiration. You can also interview interesting people and use the material.
Get rid of your fears
Being alone in another country can can make you feel unsafe, lonely, and frustrated, but if you overcome these problems, you’ll create great opportunities. Although it seems hard, travelling alone is a great way to become inspired.
Five tips for writers who travel:
- Take photos: Capture the most important things, as these photos can become an inspiration for you later. Plus, you can use them for your writing.
- Communicate with different people: Try to talk to as many people as you can. Sharing experiences, emotions, and desires is a great thing to do!
- Keep a gadget next to you: No matter what gadget you use: whether it’s a phone, a tablet, or a laptop, it’s better to keep it close to you. As soon as you see something interesting, create a note or a draft. Don’t let your muse disappear.
- Share your experience: Nowadays, most people use social networks. If you want to promote yourself as a writer, you need to create a profile. So, sharing your experience is a great way to start.
- Enjoy this trip: Do you remember a saying ‘don’t worry, be happy’? That’s exactly what you need! Try to enjoy your trip: explore more, smile more, and be who you are.
When it comes to travelling, being spontaneous is one of your greatest weapons. Open a map. Find a destination, book a flight, and go!
Have you ever tried to write when you travel? I’d like to hear about your experiences in the comment section below.

Thank you for sharing! It is so great to become a contributor to your site!
🙂
I love to write about my travels, some good, some not so, even though they’re not far away. The “not sos” are the most interesting but not the most enjoyable.
Connie, that’s nice! I believe that sharing personal experience is a great thing to do. It can be beneficial, indeed!
I frequently write while traveling. In fact, I’m leaving on a traveling/writing vacation this weekend, using the trip itself as a way to recharge and get some writing done. I find the change of scenery does a lot to recharge my creativity.
Really like that adverb z(app)er. Many thanks
I am not a writer, but when we travel, I sometimes find the inspiration to open my computer and write and it was one of the most fulfilling experiences for me.
It´s interesting. I started travelling solo and it´s been four months now since I started. Initially I set out to work on my art but Ive been more comfortable expressing myself in words. Also wrote something on travelling solo – https://projectunbroken.wordpress.com/2015/10/28/the-real-danger-of-travelling-alone/ appreciate any thoughts!
