Dorothy Parker was an American poet, short story writer, critic, screenwriter, and satirist. She became famous for her sharp wit and clever, often biting observations. She was also a founding member of the Algonquin Round Table, a group of writers, critics, and other New York literary figures. Parker worked as a writer and editor at Vogue and Vanity Fair. In 1927, she became the book reviewer known as ‘Constant Reader’ for The New Yorker, where she worked as a staff writer and contributor for much of her career. Her first collection of poetry, Enough Rope, became a bestseller, and in 1929 she won an O. Henry Award for her short story ‘Big Blonde’. Parker later moved to Hollywood, where she wrote screenplays with her second husband, Alan Campbell. Together, they worked on more than 15 films, including A Star Is Born (1937), which earned them an Academy Award nomination. Her work has been collected in books like The Portable Dorothy Parker.
