April: Making friends with your fears
Month 4
Hello Writer
This year, I want to focus on the most common challenges we face as writers.
Every month, along with a prompt for every day, I’d like to share an exercise that helps us deal with challenges like writer’s block, perfectionism, procrastination, and imposter syndrome.
Getting started
Fear loves to sit quietly on your shoulder, whispering things like ‘You’re not good enough.’ or ‘Who are you to write this?’ This month, we’re giving fear a seat at the table. We’re going to get to know our fears, and then we’ll politely ask them to step aside.
Exercise:
Step 1: List ALL your writing-related fears.
Step 2: Turn your fear into a character and write a letter from your fear: let it complain, nag, or lecture.
Step 3: Respond to the letter. Be patient, kind, and respond with truth. Be gentle. Be kind. What does your fear really want for you? How does it feel to respond with kindness and understanding?
Why does this work?
Putting your fear on the page lets you see it for what it really is. Once it’s out in the open, it’s easier to see that fear is only a feeling, not a fact. It is also something we need to learn to live with. Fear is a constant. It changes and morphs. Face your fears. Learn how they behave and manifest.
