Should You Self-Publish Without Amazon?

Should you self-publish without Amazon? Find out in this post.

Are considering self-publishing your book? (If you haven’t yet, read our series on self-publishing.) Do you think it is possible and would you like to do so without Amazon?

There are a few reasons why a writer would consider not publishing through Amazon:

  1. They don’t like Jeff or anything rocket or Amazon related.
  2. They would prefer to diversify their offer and income streams.
  3. They have an existing audience and would prefer to publish via their website.

Should You Self-Publish Without Amazon?

In this video, Dave Henderson and I discuss self-publishing and whether or you should or could do it without Amazon.

Love it or hate it, Amazon is a huge part of the book market and we discuss if, and when, an author should self-publish without using the giant. We discuss alternatives to Amazon, when you should use aggregator platforms, and if you should simply sell books directly from your own website.

As always, Dave includes publishing advice specific to South African self-publishing authors.

  1. Apple
  2. Google Play
  3. Kobo
  4. Barnes & Noble
  5. Draft2Digital
  6. Publishdrive
  7. Ingramspark
  8. Lulu.com
  9. Smashwords

Please remember, the choice to self-publish and which platforms you choose to use is entirely up to you as the author. One of the main reasons a writer chooses to self-publish is because they wish to remain in control of their book. This includes creative decisions, sales and marketing decisions, and distribution decisions.

Every platform has pros and cons. Evaluate the goals for your project, be realistic about how much time you have available, and about how much money you want to, or can, spend.

Don’t let anyone tell you what you must or must not do. Make your own decisions, do your own research and see what will be best for you.
