William Godwin was an English journalist, political philosopher, and novelist. He is considered the first modern proponent of anarchism. Godwin is most famous for writing Enquiry Concerning Political Justice and Its Influence on Modern Morals and Happiness, and Caleb Williams, which attacks aristocratic privilege, and is also the first mystery novel. Godwin married the feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft, and their daughter, Mary Godwin, who became Mary Shelley, wrote Frankenstein.
