I’d never seen that definition before. I’d always understood virago to mean a nasty, bad-tempered woman. Then I saw your kindly meaning and looked it up elsewhere.
Sure enough, there was the horrible meaning first, but with this under Archaic: a woman of masculine strength or spirit; a female warrior. Much better, although there was a sting in the tail with the descriptor for her strength as ‘masculine’.
I still prefer the meaning I found here on your site. Thank you.
