Kate Chopin Quotes

  1. To be an artist includes much; one must possess many gifts – absolute gifts – which have not been acquired by one’s own effort. And, moreover, to succeed, the artist must possess the courageous soul.
  2. I trust it will not be giving away professional secrets to say that many readers would be surprised, perhaps shocked, at the questions which some newspaper editors will put to a defenseless woman under the guise of flattery.
  3. A person can’t have everything in this world; and it was a little unreasonable of her to expect it.
  4. I wonder if anyone else has an ear so tuned and sharpened as I have, to detect the music, not of the spheres, but of earth, subtleties of major and minor chord that the wind strikes upon the tree branches. Have you ever heard the earth breathe?

Kate Chopin was an American author of short stories and novels. She is considered to have been a forerunner of American 20th-century feminist authors of Southern or Catholic background, such as Zelda Fitzgerald. Her novel The Awakening and her short stories are read today around the world. The female characters in The Awakening went beyond the social norms of the time, with the novel exploring marital infidelity from the perspective of a married woman
