1. I love writing and telling stories. Writing is a form of advocacy. Writing helps me to be a better person.
2. My writing typically starts with a question. When I’m very lucky, a character comes along to help me answer it.
3. I write to understand the past, to make sense of the future, and to help imagine a more equitable tomorrow. I write to figure out what’s next.
4. Stories help me navigate the world. They remind me how connected people are and in some ways, how very different our experiences might be. I’ve always loved stories; they are how I get to know people; how I get to know myself.

6. When I write, I write out loud. It may be because I love being told a story. I talk scenes out, in character, and then I write them. Once I have a scene or section written on the page, I read it out loud, in character, to see what happens next.

Yvonne Battle-Felton is an American writer living in the UK. She writes fiction and creative nonfiction and her writing has been published in literary journals and anthologies. Her debut novel, Remembered, was longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction.
