Shmuel Agnon was an Israeli writer and Nobel Prize laureate. He was one of the central figures of modern Hebrew fiction as both a novelist and short-story writer. In English, his works are published under the name S. Y. Agnon. Translations of his works include In the Heart of the Seas (1948; Bi-levav yamim) and Two Tales (1966; Edo ve-Enam). In 1966, he was the co-recipient, with Nelly Sachs, of the Nobel Prize for Literature.
