Hammond Innes was a British novelist best known for his fast-paced adventure stories. During his career, he wrote more than 30 novels, along with several children’s books and travel books. Innes followed a disciplined writing routine. He spent six months travelling and researching locations around the world before devoting the next six months to writing his novel. His careful research gave his stories an authenticity that readers loved. His books sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, and he is best remembered for The Wreck of the Mary Deare. In 1978, he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to literature.
