Jean Burden was born 1 September 1914 and died 21 April 2008.
- A dog, I have always said, is prose; a cat is a poem.
- Poetry should move people to cry.
- What I’ve learned to do as a teacher is to pull poems out of people. And to be able to criticise poems without criticising the poet.
- You don’t write poetry when you are happy.
Jean Burden was an American poet, essayist, and author. She was the poetry editor for Yankee magazine for nearly fifty years. She is the author of Taking Light from Each Other. She also wrote six animal-care books under the name Felicia Ames.
