  1. There was an inevitable consequence to the Red Death no matter how the Prince and his followers thought they could avoid it by shutting themselves up in his castle and having fun.

Afterwards the city over which he had ruled for 30 years was deserted. There was an eerie sound you could somehow hear as you came through the city walls. Think about it, those walls were supposed to protect the city from invasion but nothing can protect you from the plague.

It did not take long for all the senses to pervade and discomfort my well-being. First was the sound, then came an overpowering smell of nothingness. It was as if no one had ever existed within those walls. It was not what i had anticipated. I had thought that I would be nauseous. Well I was but not in the way I had expected. Perhaps we don’t realise that we can always smell something but not now.

What was strange, even peculiar, was that the water fountain was still working. I wondered if I should taste the water and took the risk. It was pure, as if the plague had in some way clarified it.

What next, I thought? What did I see? Nothing. There was nothing to move. Well, that’s not really quite right. I came across the Town Hall and went inside. Each office was a model of perfect tidiness. It seemed that before anyone became victim to the plague he or she had decided to leave the premises in a pristine condition.

The desks were in place, old fashioned blotters and ink wells lined up in an orderly fashion. I opened an ink well and touched the ink. It was fresh. The whole city had been cleansed and was ready for reoccupation.
