  1. Growing up in Germany had been exciting:we were well-to-do, my parents were respected members of the academic world, our house was often crowded with prominent intellectuals, politicians and businessmen.
Those days have long gone: I never imagined the depths to which human fear and hatred can sink.
When I look out at nature’s snow, pure and white, and see surrounding it cruel, menacing barbed wire, I know that our days are numbered.

  2. ‘They’re for your protection’, that’s what they told us. To us, they symbolized how far we had fallen in a world that used to be free. Those fences of barbed wire held us captive and reminded us just how far we had to go to be set free once more.

  3. “Your world ends at these walls,” they’d told him the first day he arrived, in an orange jumpsuit with “DoJ” printed across the back.
“You were so wrong,” he said softly, then opened his book and started reading.

  4. Not even the guards are free here.

Our tours here are long, and our orders are to shoot to kill anyone who tries to get over this wall. Some gladly leave pieces of themselves behind, and others are glad of the mercy we provide when we find them, struggling like fish.
