Hexie was the stray dog who came begging at our front door when we were at our cottage at the coast. She was in a bad way. We took her to the local vet and had him fix her back to health.
We thought a lot about this sweet black dog of somewhat undeterminable breed. At the end of our subsequent visit she looked so forlorn at our departure that we decided to bring her home with us.
She settled in very cosily with our three pedigrees except for cowering under the chair when there was a storm. But she didn’t make old bones and we were devastated when she got ill and was in serious pain. We felt it kindest to have her put down.
Our cottage is by the say but very close to a pretty river. I wrote a goodbye note to Hexie, put it in a bottle and through the bottle over a bridge into the river.
