Book Review – The Novel Cure – An A-Z of Literary Remedies

by Ella Berthoud and Susan Elderkin (Canongate) ISBN: 9780857864208

This is a wonderful book for writers and lovers of great fiction. At first glance, it may seem like a novelty book for hard-core bibliophiles but it contains practical advice for even the most casual reader.

Its more than 400 pages hold the literary cure for just about any malaise. If you’re suffering from obsession, the authors advise reading Death in Venice or Moby Dick. If anger is a problem, getting back to Santiago in The Old Man and the Sea is recommended. If the housework is getting you down, they suggest Stepford Wives or Diary of a Mad Housewife.

The book also boasts panels, relating to specific reading ailments—anything from the guilt of buying too many books or reading amnesia. It also lists the top ten recommended books for any occasion. It would make a great stocking filler for book nerds.
