Book Review – No Longer Whispering To Power

The Story of Thuli Madonsela by Thandeka Gqubule (Jonathan Ball Publishers) ISBN 9781868427314

No Longer Whispering to Power details Thuli Madonsela’s seven year tenure as South Africa’s public protector where she made an invaluable, admirable contribution. She was praised, vilified, and threatened during her term, but remained steadfast.

‘I love the execution of the law, it gives me a great sense of joy,’ says Madonsela. ‘That is why I am able to take all the troubles of the job.’

This tells us what kind of person Thuli is. She is softly spoken, yet powerful, and she is always courageous. She is not daunted by greedy, unlawful people and organisations.

She exposes one scandal after another, involving unscrupulous ANC members. These include the crimes committed to upgrade Nkandla when Jacob Zuma used state money for his own home. Others include Prasa, Eskom, the railway debacle, the Guptas, SABC fund misuse, and the list goes on, revealing State Capture to the detriment of the country, especially the poor.

The book is a must-read. It is an interesting and informative exposé of corruption. Thuli continues to be an inspirational activist, believing in justice for all.
