Book Review – Nicko

Nicko – The Tale of a Vervet Monkey on an African Farm by Penny Haw (Struik Children) ISBN: 978-1-43230-759-2

This is the story of Nicko, a Vervet monkey who, as a baby, was abandoned by his family in a mealie-land. When brought to Alice Kirk and her husband, Jack’s farm in Rivermead, he is taken in and offered a new home. Nicko is raised alongside domestic and wild animals. He has many unusual friends, including a Sottish terrier, two borzois, a polecat, a wildcat, a Manx cat, an Irish setter, a fox terrier, and a duiker.

Nicko is a mysterious and interesting monkey who cannot be controlled. Learn about the true and entertaining adventures of Nicko through Alice’s eyes (Alice is the author’s grandmother). The detailed descriptions take you to exciting places and allow you to experience Alice’s emotions. This is a good read, especially for animal lovers, deserving a 4 out of 5.
