Book Review – Frederick

by Leo Lionni (Jacana Media) ISBN: 9781431424559

Frederick the mouse lives with a bunch of other mice, in an old stonewall. With winter on its way, the mice start to gather corn, nuts, wheat and straw for storage. They work all night and day gathering their provisions. Everyone except for Frederick, that is.

And just before you start to think that this sounds like the grasshopper and the ant story, let me assure you it’s not. In fact this story explores the power of the mind to overcome hunger, cold and other afflictions that might make life a challenge. The greater meaning of the story might be lost on little ones, but definitely a moral worthy for parents to bear in mind when getting lost in the daily drudgery of the everyday.

Leo Lionni is such a clever writer who manages to explore deep topics while still appealing to younger minds.
