Book Review – A Gentleman In Moscow

A Gentleman In Moscow by Amor Towles (Hutchinson) ISBN: 9781786330383

A Gentleman In Moscow is glorious, sigh-inducing, beautiful, lyrical, and just plain wonderful.

Count Alexander Rostov is sentenced to house arrest in the Hotel Metropol by the Bolshevik Tribunal for being an unrepentant aristocrat. He spends the rest of his many days in the hotel as a permanent resident. He gives up his suite and move to an attic room with a clock, a desk, and an old book collection. He learns about the finer things of life like love, friendship and the value of skeleton keys.

Set in Russia after the revolution, the novel, about a stationary character, portrays an ever-changing environment as the old gives way to the new.

I wanted to savour every word. I wanted to sit in the lobby and watch the guests arrive and indulge in tea at the beautiful restaurant, linger at the bar with a cocktail, and join the trio for lunch in the kitchen. It was slow at times, but I loved it.
