George Herbert was a Welsh-born English poet, orator, and Anglican priest. His poetry is associated with the writings of the metaphysical poets and his poems are notable for the purity and effectiveness of his choice of words. Herbert described his poems as “a picture of the many spiritual conflicts that have passed between God and my soul, before I could subject mine to the will of Jesus, my Master, in whose service I have now found perfect freedom.” In 1633 all of his English poems were published in The Temple: Sacred Poems and Private Ejaculations, with a preface by Ferrar.
