Julia Alvarez is a Dominican-American poet, novelist, and essayist. Born in New York of Dominican descent, she spent the first ten years of her life in the Dominican Republic, before returning to the US. Her novels include How the García Girls Lost Their Accents and In the Time of the Butterflies. Her most recent novel is The Cemetery of Untold Stories. Many of Alvarez’s children’s books are retellings of stories she heard in the Dominican Republic. Her forthcoming poetry collection, Visitations, will be published in 2026. Alvarez has been the recipient of several prestigious honors, including the F. Scott Fitzgerald Award for Achievement in American Literature in 2009. In 2013, she received the National Medal of Arts from President Obama.
