Georgette Heyer Quotes

  1. You’re only a man! You’ve not our gifts! I can tell you! Why, a woman can think of a hundred different things at once, all them contradictory!
  2. It was growing late, and though one might stand on the brink of a deep chasm of disaster, one was still obliged to dress for dinner.
  3. There is nothing so mortifying as to fall in love with someone who does not share one’s sentiments.
  4. I think myself I ought to be shot for writing such nonsense, but it’s unquestionably good escapist literature; & I think I should rather like it if I were sitting in an air-raid shelter, or recovering from flu.
  5. You will find me in my books.

Georgette Heyer was a prolific English writer who created the Regency England genre of romance novels. Titles include The Unknown Ajax and The Grand Sophy. She also wrote in the detective fiction genre. In 1932, Heyer had become the breadwinner of her family, releasing one romance and one crime thriller novel a year. An intensely private person, Heyer was a bestselling author all her life without the aid of publicity. She made no appearances, never gave an interview, and only answered fan letters herself if they made an interesting historical point. She continued writing right up until her death in 1974. Her final novel, My Lord John, was published posthumously.
