John Mortimer was an English barrister and writer. He penned novels, autobiographical works, and plays for the stage. He also wrote for television, radio, and film. Mortimer began his writing career as a novelist with the publication of Charade. Many of his works drew on his legal experience, and the television production of his play The Dock Brief established his reputation. He is best remembered for short stories about a barrister named Horace Rumpole, which were adapted from episodes of the TV series Rumpole of the Bailey also written by Mortimer. Throughout his writing career Mortimer maintained his law practice and became known as one of Great Britain’s principal defenders in free-speech and civil-rights cases. He wrote a memoir titled Clinging to the Wreckage: Another Part of Life. Mortimer won a BAFTA Award for creating Rumpole. He was awarded a CBE in 1986, and he was knighted in the 1998 Birthday Honours.
