World Book Day is a yearly event on 23 April. It is organised by UNESCO to promote reading, publishing, and copyright.

The date is also symbolic for world literature because:

  1. Cervantes, Shakespeare, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died on 23 April 1616.
  2. 23 April is also taken as Shakespeare’s birthday (he was baptised on 26 April 1564, and his actual date of birth is unknown).
