Book Review – Goblin Diaries – Apprenticed to the Red Witch

by Alex D’Angelo (Tafelberg) ISBN 978-0-624-05289-0

The story is written in the form of entries into the eleven-year-old goblin Ymaldris’ diary. He describes his family, home and way of living. He has been appointed as an apprentice to the Red Witch for seven years.
Ymaldris discusses the goblin world and their laws. Their leader is the dark lord. Ymaldris is learning the veil walk where he will be transported to another world.
He proves to be an excellent student, learning magic from the Red Witch’s books and he is tested daily. His Uncle Silvestris is a renowned wizard, but at this point has been frozen out of action and Ymaldris’ family are having problems of their own. Meanwhile Ymaldris is being groomed for a special task unbeknown to him, although he has his suspicions. Suspense and anticipation mount as the story unfolds and Ymaldris becomes an integral part of the plot.
Magic and mythology are interwoven, spiced with humour. The book is well-illustrated to add to the enjoyment. It is an imaginative fantasy that is easy to read. Recommended for both parents and children. This is a version of Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings written by a local author.
