The Song Rising by Samantha Shannon (Bloomsbury) ISBN: 978-1-4088-7972-6
I have loved the Fantasy Fiction genre since I was a young tween reading The Hobbit because it transports you to other dimensions and worlds where anything can happen. The Song Rising by Samantha Shannon does not disappoint. Shannon creates a gritty, Dystopian perspective of the world as we know it, with well-rounded characters that I loved and loved to hate.
Paige Mahoney is a relatable protagonist. She is a clairvoyant of the 8th Order who, having overthrown her predecessor, Jaxon Hall, must ensure she stays five steps ahead of her enemies. There is a new deadly technology and danger lurking within her own ranks.
I could not put this book down. I did not want it to end. It is the third book in a series called The Bone Season, which explains why it was initially difficult to grasp who was who. Because the world in the book feels like it is right here, right now, it helped pull me into the story more.
Of course, it was such a memorable read that I will read the first two books to ‘catch up’ on the backstory to Paige and her loyal criminals of the London Underworld.
