Book Review – The Park by Gail Schimmel

What makes a good mother? Gail Schimmel explores this theme in her intriguing new novel.

One thing good mothers do is take their children to the park. And it’s to the park that artist Rebecca takes her daughter Amy – and meets Rose and Lilith, two other mothers. However, the easy friendship soon becomes dangerous – taking Rebecca from the park to the courtroom.

The book has a great suburban setting in Northern Johannesburg, with places and characters local readers can relate to. What could easily have become a heavy domestic drama is saved by the author’s deft comic touches and great characterisations.

It will have you turning the pages as these three women’s secrets are laid bare – especially Lilith’s! It’s a story about families, friendship, raising children, schooling and adoption – a highly readable novel that will resonate with mothers everywhere. See it at a Book Club near you!
