Book Review – The Girls

by Lisa Jewell (Century) ISBN: 9781780893600

Lisa Jewell is one of my favourite authors. Her characterisation and storytelling abilities make her books readable and believable.

Clare moves into a flat on a communal garden with her two daughters, Pip and Grace. Her husband, who suffers from a mental illness, has burnt their house down and is now in hospital. The two girls make friends with the other children in the garden, and through them, the lives of the different residents reveal themselves.

When Grace is found unconscious and assaulted in the garden, we realise that nothing is as it seems. ‘The Girls’ reminds us that everyone has secrets and unfulfilled wishes and desires. Sometimes the people who seem normal are the most disturbed and vice versa.

Lisa Jewell skilfully crafts a story with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the final chapters.
