This book was first published as Whiplash by Modjaji Books in 2008. This edition was released as a tie-in with the film release in South Africa.
Tess, a white woman from Durban, is living a dangerous and miserable life. She is a prostitute in a dodgy part of Cape Town, in denial about her addiction to pain medication, and terrified of birds.
After some traumatic experiences, she hits rock bottom. Then, three miracles happen that transform her life in ways she never imagined possible. She finds her joy and soul connection again with the help of those around her who are more family to her than her actual family is.
This is a thought-provoking story. It shows us that there are always hidden elements in humans. We are complex creatures with conscious and subconscious fears, loves, hopes and regrets. I highly recommend this book.
