Book Review – Magnus Chase And The Sword Of Summer

by Rick Riordan (Puffin Books) ISBN: 978-0-141-34242-9

Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer is the first book in Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard trilogy from Rick Riordan, the author of the very popular Percy Jackson series. While Percy Jackson has his adventures in the world of the Greek gods, Magnus Chase finds that the Norse mythology his mom read to him when he was little, are actually true.

Magnus Chase is sixteen and sleeping under a bridge in the Boston Public Garden. He has been homeless for two years, ever since his mother died under unusual circumstances. In the first few chapters he dies a gruesome death. That’s when his quest to find his father’s sword and to prevent Ragnarok (Norse for Armageddon) begins.
He is assisted by a flamboyant cast of characters, including Thor and Odin to name a few. Extreme circumstances and fast paced adventure bring the ragtag group of friends he makes closer together, giving Magnus back a semblance of the family he has been missing for two years.

Magnus is the narrator; his dry sense of humour serves him well in the face of dire circumstance. Packed with action and richly descriptive, a refreshing read for young adult readers.
