Book Review – Handmade Gifts From The Kitchen

Handmade Gifts From The Kitchen by Alison Walker (Struik Lifestyle) ISBN: 9781432309329

It’s always nice to give presents, but a homemade beautifully wrapped gift is even more special. This book is flowing over with ideas to take to a dinner party or to surprise someone with in the festive season. As Walker writes in her introduction, a gift made with love: what could be better than that?

Each recipe comes with a picture and a suggestion of packaging or decoration. One of my favourites is how to make crystallised flowers for the fondant cupcakes. Macarons were always intimidating to make, but with Walker’s recipe I realized they were not difficult, just time-consuming. There are chapters about filling jars with different salts, jams, chutneys, oils and cordials, which make perfect gifts that you can keep in the pantry. And of course the delights of chocolate: truffles, chocolate kisses and the best chocolate sauce.

Finally, Alison Walker gives suggestions for gift sets like a Christmas cookie kit or a spice box.

The book is beautiful and appealing and the ingredients are all available in South Africa.
